Nick Griffin
Green Anarchy
No.19 (Spring 2005)

Recently a man who hung out in Eugene around green anarchists started promoting the idea of National Anarchism. A few years ago he had written a well-known essay from a green anarchist perspective, and he was a familiar face to many. [2007 note: "Chris" wrote the article "Against Mass Society", which can be found on the cover of Green Anarchy #6 (Summer 2001) and is reprinted in Our Enemy Civilization: An Anthology Against Modernity.] His new belief system advocated that people of different ethnic backgrounds should live in different villages, and he later wrote a letter to Green Anarchy in an attempt to propagate his views about supposedly “natural” hierarchies. [GA note: We were going to print his letter, but it is almost as long as this article, and we did not want to provide a forum for his ideas on "natural hierarchies" and "National Anarchism". If people are interested in the letter, and who wrote it, you can contact us.] Fortunately his attempt to spread this racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic (so-called) “anarchism” were quickly unveiled. But what is National Anarchism? How did it arise, and what does it stand for, and why are these racist Right-wingers attempting to recruit anarchists?

Radical politics of all kinds took a new turn after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and this accelerated after the demonstrations against the WTO in Seattle in 1999. Decentralized and networked political forms started becoming the predominant types of resistance. In the last few years, we have seen anarchism replace marxism as the dominant radical movement in the U.S., but changes have also occurred elsewhere. Parts of the white power movement started advocating “leaderless resistance” as early as the 1980s; the Islamic jihadists Al Qaeda are a state-less, transnational entity; and even marxist groups like Left Turn have rejected the tight “vanguard party” model in favor of a more network-based structure.

But anarchism itself has also became a magnet for the racist radical right, and a tiny fringe group in the UK called the National Revolutionary Faction has re-christened itself as National Anarchists. They are attempting to use anarchist symbolism and rhetoric to recruit both “White Nationalists” (WN, a catch-all term for the various kinds of white racists) as well as anarchists – especially green anarchists – to their strange belief system. They advocate a decentralized economic and political system which features ethnically-pure villages which are defined by racial separatism, anti-semitism and homophobia.

Most National Anarchists (NA) tend to be long-time participants in the Nazi or other racist movements (ie Klan, Christian Identity) who are looking for a new “hook” to use to break-out of the ghettoized White Nationalist scene. Many are former skinheads who retain their interests in racist Oi!, metal and goth bands, European football (soccer), and sci-fi. They also tend to be interested in occult or pagan religions, although the proprietor of the sole NA-affiliated website in the U.S. is a Christian. Sometimes they are interested in the ecology movement or animal rights, although this seems mostly to be lip service to attract anarchists to their ideas. Their real interests are clearly racism against non-white people and a hatred of Jews.

Unfortunately, their bait has seemed to hook a few from the anarchist scene, mostly mystical anarchists, individualists, and green anarchists – including the aforementioned Eugene hanger-on. There has always been a small Left-Right crossover point, especially where the politics involve a mixture of anti-capitalism, mysticism, environmentalism and questions of technology. (Although skewed in its conclusions, Ecofascism: Lessons from the German Experience by Janet Biehl and Peter Staudenmaier offers a detailed historical account of this, and many of the racists have read this and taken it as a guide.)

In Germany, there is also a similar phenomena afoot. There is a wave of fascist groups that are attempting to cross-recruit by sporting Che t-shirts and Palestinian scarves, even marching in Black Blocs! Sometimes calling themselves Autonomous Nationalists, they – just like the National Anarchists – are attempting to pull people from anarchist and left movements into the white racist milieu.

NA guru Troy Southgate claims that NA is a “Third Way” between Capitalism and Communism, and has nothing to do with “fascism". But he can only do this by falsifying history; for it is fascism that has always been called the Third Way. Southgate attempts to mobilize various philosophies in defense of his project, but he can only do it by distorting their messages. For example, in an essay on National Anarchist history, Southgate cites Gautama (the first Buddha) in support of his own work – but the Buddha was an opponent of the racist caste system. Southgate invokes Hakim Bey, a queer man who would be horrified at this usage of his ideas. Southgate also misattributes Fichte's trinitarian concept to Hegel, whose dialectic is not triadic at all, but rather involves a more complicated process of double negations (the negation of the object and then the negation of the negation). Southgate’s attempts at constructing a NA lineage are bullshit to anyone who has read their references.

But besides the details, Southgate’s general claims are historical revisions and obfuscations which only serve to cover up NA’s function as an attempt to recruit people to the same sour old racist right under a new label. Nationalists have even been known to call themselves “anti-fascists” by attempting to redefine Socialists like the PDS (a German left-wing party) as “fascists". Nonetheless, Southgate quite openly proclaims NA’s intellectual forefathers to be the “left-wing” of the original German Nazi party. Under the leadership of Otto Strasser, these “left-wing fascists” advocated a racist, anti-semitic, ecological, anti-capitalism before being thrown out of the party by Hitler in 1930, several years before his rise to power. A long discussion on the Stormfront site (a kind of bizarro-world for racists) will confirm that racist “White Nationalists” themselves look to NA to recruit anarchists and others to their cause, much the same way that Marxist-Leninists utilize the strategy of front groups. Here is an excerpt from that page, in a post by Pan Zagloba:

How can National Anarchism recruit people to our cause?

It speaks to these kids [anarchists] in a language they understand, which draws them closer to our side, and makes them more open to our ideas.

It plays upon their distrust of Marxism, Zionism, and ZOG [the “Zionist-Occupied Government"].

It demonstrates to them something that they probably don’t realize now – that many WN values are often the same as theirs. These include concern for the environment, distrust of globalization and the NWO, and a desire to preserve the rights of indigenous peoples (in our case, Europeans).

Websites and other media that support National Anarchism expose them to quotes from prominent Anarchist thinkers which actually support WN, such as Bakunin’s and Bookchin’s writings on nationalism.

It can show them that the mainstream Left’s version of “diversity” doesn’t leave room for Whites. This can be very instrumental, as a large portion of the Anarchist movement is made up of disaffected White youth.

Once they become more interested in National Anarchism, they are more open to the influence of other nationalist and WN ideas, up to and including National Socialism.

How can we be sure this is the case?

Well, this is purely anecdotal, but: It worked on me, and I have the feeling that I’m not the only one here on Stormfront who may have been attracted to WN due to exposure to National Anarchist ideas.

NA itself has a complicated history. Its origins are in a ‘70s UK racist right-wing party called the National Front, who are probably best known to U.S. anarchists as the object of hatred in many ’77 punk songs. The group adopted a “Third Positionist” stance in the ‘80s, attempting to meld elements of communist and fascist political systems. They embraced racial separatism (as opposed to White Supremacy, which often advocates racial genocide) and started to work with black and Asian racial nationalist groups to promote their common ends of ethnic separatism. In the early ‘90s these politics were later copied by Florida Klan leader (and former SDS member) John Baumgardner, which led to the spectacle of joint Klan and Black nationalist demonstrations, held in conjunction with Chief Osiris Akkebala’s Pan-African Internationalist Movement (PAIN).

Originally a two-tone Ska skin, Southgate ‘crossed-over’ into the white power Oi! scene and became a teenage National Front organizer. He later navigated several splits in the party-turned-movement, first entering the International Third Position (who tried to recruit the far-right Roman Catholics of the Society of St. Pious X), and then the English Nationalist Movement (ENM). In 1998 the National Revolutionary Faction came out of the ENM, and then in turn morphed into the National Anarchist movement in 2003. NA is friendly with groups such as the National Bolsheviks in Russia, who mix their Stalinism with German fascism, and NA cites influences as diverse as occult philosopher Julius Evola, Libyan leader Colonel Qathafi and former UK Green Anarchist editor Richard Hunt. Hunt quit the magazine to form the eco-fascist Alternative Green group, which Southgate says NRF was “heavily influenced by” and which helped prompt their transition to so-called “anarchism".

NAs also frequently cite anarchist founders Proudhon and Bakunin as influences, supposedly for their advocacy of an economically decentralized society. Actually, they are more interested in their anti-semitism, an unfortunate attribute that both thinkers shared but which all anarchists since have repudiated. If this wasn’t the case, why are NAs reluctant to mention other decentralists such as Alexander Berkman or Emma Goldman? The answer is because of their clear opposition to nationalism, and their progressive politics and Jewish backgrounds. Jews were always a vital part of the European anarchist movement, and no amount of NA historical revisionism can change this.

Southgate sometimes makes feeble attempts to avoid answering if NA is anti-semitic, lest its true nature as a White Nationalist front group be revealed and potential recruits be put off. However, in a Stormfront discussion, the man who posts as “Faith & Folk” calls for fellow-travelling National Bolsheviks to be “more folk centered and dare I say anti-Zionist and Judaic". In a 2001 interview (, after a rant about “International Zionism” and the banking industry, Southgate is asked point-blank if he is an anti-semite. He responds by reciting a bizarre story about Israeli Jews actually being not Jewish but being members of another ethnic group, while at no point repudiating anti-semitism. In the same interview he says that he is not a fascist “because the main tenets of this creed – bureaucracy, centralisation, the police state, the cult of personality, the mass movement etc. – are contrary to our objectives". Naturally, the Nazi murder of 6 million Jews represents no problem to Southgate. Only organizational issues separate him from the Hitler cultists.

In the end, since there is so little that is anarchist in National Anarchism, they will probably have limited success in recruiting anarchists. Anarchists seek the abolition of all hierarchies on the basis of our common humanity – not a separatism based on ethnic, religious or sexual identity. In any event, most NAs seem obsessed with watching and deprecating the more orthodox racist factions, as if they were somehow not just as much a part of the white power circus. But if people appear in your scene sporting the National Anarchist symbol (a purple star with an NA in the middle), or attempt to promote the setting up of separate ethnic villages, know that these people are not talking about a new kind of anarchism, but just a very old and obscure style of fascism. If you encounter these people, don’t be fooled by the surface similarities; treat them as if they were Klan members or Nazis. The only difference is that this time, instead of pointy hats and braces, their racist ideas come dressed in a hoodie and patches.

By way of reply...

The phony anarchist responsible for the fake 'Yarra National Anarchists' blog - Geelong teenager Scott Harrison - is upset.

Because his blog was upset.

Supposedly, his blog was the "victim of hackers".

Boo hoo.

Naturally, Scott provides no evidence for this claim.

Neither does he acknowledge the fact that his blog was once administered by some brown-shirt called 'David' - from Richmond - and another called 'Andreas' - from Tasmania! In other words, the 'Yarra National Anarchists' @ are frauds. They (that is, he) lie on two counts: one, they are not anarchists; and two, they are not active (unless you count planting pumpkin seeds, eating, drinking, and being shooed away from a trade union rally as purposeful activity).

Of course, in addition to Australia, "national anarchist" groups are inactive in a small number of other countries - Germany, Holland, Portugal, the UK and the US - but hugely active in their imaginations. As a result of this weakness, "national anarchists" are known to attempt to attach themselves to 'activists', or 'causes', or 'issues' - or just about any body or any thing, for that matter - they pretend to agree with. In terms of their organisational structure, however, the "national anarchists" are forced to rely upon their comrades on the far right for support (as evidenced by their appearance at an APEC rally in 2007). This naturally includes groups and individuals who violently assault others, terrorise families, and vandalise shops and homes, simply because of their horribly mistaken belief that they, like the "national anarchists", belong to a Master Race.

What motivates their attacks?

"National anarchism" evolved out of the far right. Thus a resurgent anarchist movement attracts the attention not only of authorities and leftists, but "White nationalists" as well.

The preferred activity of "White nationalists" is to chatter online. (In this sense - as in so many others - they are very similar to their comrades in the "national anarchist" movement.) 'Stormfront' is one major forum, and "national anarchists" find a natural home there. In fact, just about anybody that identifies as 'White' and who hates Jews is welcome on 'Stormfront'. Opposition to racial, sexual and social equality; the free movement of peoples; homosexuality; feminism; and other 'progressive' ideas are among other common traits.

Both groups also tend to cry a lot when correctly labelled (racist, sexist, homophobic, and so on).

"White nationalists" claim - or perhaps aim - to be the political representation of the White nation (race). They attempt to justify their irrational brand of politics, and their sporadic use of violence, by claiming that they act in the interests of Whites as a whole. These interests are, they claim, under attack.

In reality, such claims have a history, as do the individuals and groups which advance them. Anti-fascists are familiar with this history, which they have studied, and object, sometimes militantly, to bricks being thrown at elderly folk for being the 'wrong' colour, women being attacked and forced to seek refuge in their homes because they are of another ethnicity or religion, or workers being discriminated against because of their sexual preference. Racist and fascist thugs, both today and yesterday, have been, will be, and should be resisted: that some dress in anarchist drag is irrelevant to this task.

The ideas of 'freedom of speech' and 'freedom of association', rejected by "national anarchists", are ones that they nevertheless try to hide behind when their ignorance and stupidity is confronted. Thus, while on the one hand being perfectly 'free' to spout nonsense, on the other hand they demand protection from the anti-fascist monsters that haunt their imaginations. It is perhaps indicative of the level of emotional and psychological maturity of its adherents that "national anarchists" behave so childishly when let loose in the realms of political debate and discussion.

Who benefits?

Ostensibly, the far right. When a far-right group poses as being 'anti-globalisation', for example, it attempts to attach itself to a popular cause. This phenomenon was noted in the late '90s by, among others, the Dutch group De Fabel van de illegaal ('Together with the New Right against globalisation?', October 1998). Success in such matters can be tricky, however, and thus far the attempt has been largely unsuccessful. Of the "national anarchists" in particular, they are universally shunned by anarchists and the left, but do, at least, have the merit of being the butt of a new series of jokes for anti-fascists.

What can be done?

In theory, "national anarchists" are willing to work with and to support anybody willing to tolerate their nonsense. In practice, this is a relatively small circle, almost entirely confined to the far right. One exception is the bizarro Libyan dictator Gaddafi, and his Green Book, which "national anarchists" have been trumpeting for some time.

We do not blame racist white teenagers for having the illusions that they do. The Australian state was built on a White foundation, and being insecure, these teenagers wish to return to it - like a baby who resists being weaned. We also understand that some of these teenagers feel marginalised, surrounded by what seems to them to be the impregnable fortress of adulthood, a world which they have trouble in analysing and understanding, and which they feel most comfortable referring to as simply 'The System'. We know something of how they feel, and can relate. However, the boys and girls who think that being a racist, while calling oneself an anarchist, is either big or clever, will discover - perhaps painfully - that in reality this is not the case.

If you know any teenagers that have been caught up in "national anarchist" or other racist, right-wing circles, let them know that they can join in the struggle for social justice and environmental sustainability if they want, but that they need to work together with other people if they - and we - are going to succeed. Give them the opportunity to see that explaining - let alone resolving - their personal crises by way of their racist beliefs isn’t going to make their lives any better, and that scapegoating other races for their own weaknesses really isn’t going to defeat 'The System', it merely reinforces it.

Only united, will we never be defeated!

Who's who in the "national anarchist" zoo?

The "national anarchists" in Australia are a tiny mob on the fringes of the far right.

Their leading ideologue is Welf Herfurth, a 40-something German-born resident of Sydney.

Several years ago, "Tim Johnstone" interviewed Herfurth about his life and ideas. The ensuing article was originally titled 'Welf Herfurth, "Prussian Socialist"', and published (July 10, 2005) on the obscure 'news' site, but was later changed to 'read Against the Reductio Ad Hitlerum' and published (August 6, 2007) on the website of the New Right Australia ("and New Zealand").

So who is Welf Herfurth? He is a German political activist, and businessman, who lives in Australia and who was born in West Germany in the 1960s. He is an interesting example of how the ‘nationalist gene’ skips one generation. Both of his grandfathers served in elite divisions of the Wehrmacht in the Second World War, and one of them was a member of the Sturmabteilung [SA: the Nazi brown-shirts], who was expelled from the SA for marrying a German woman ‘without permission’. His family suffered horribly, like millions of Germans, at the hands of the Allied victors after the war.

One would expect, then, that Welf’s parents would be nationalist as well. But they are typical of the current generation of German ‘baby-boomers’: liberal democrat and fanatically anti-nationalist, praying to the god of money. The Germans of Welf’s parents’ generation are conditioned to react to German National Socialism, anti-Semitism, racialism, with disgust and horror (and, in my experience, the Australians of my parents’ generation are as well). The ‘baby-boomers’ in the West experienced a lot of brainwashing in the sixties and seventies; and part of the anti-nationalism of the German boomers is a revolt against one’s parents, who were acquiescent at the time Hitler and his associates were busy gassing all those Jews and turning them into bars of soap, etc.

Welf became politically active as a young man. He spent some years in Iran with his family, when the revolution against the Shah broke out in 1979 [Welf attended school for several years in Tehran]. He witnessed firsthand how oppressive governments can be overthrown and how America is running internal policies of foreign countries, and, by doing so, how they try to establish the empire of the USA. Afterwards Welf did, and has continued to do, a great deal of travelling around the world – something which has enhanced his appreciation and respect for people of other races and cultures. It annoys Welf that so many nationalists think their country is the best and superior when they have never travelled.

Unfortunately, his life of activism, and his uncompromising nationalism, took its toll on his professional life: he lost three jobs in Germany because of his ideas, and eventually left for Australia in the 1980s. Once he arrived, he made contact with Dr James Saleam, then of National Action, and joined, of all parties, the Australian Democrats – a left-liberal party, which, at the time, was an alternative party, and made it to the position of State Executive. The question is, why the Australian Democrats? The answer is that Welf was interested in the same social issues as the Democrats, and that the Democrats were the only genuine third party at the time.

Welf went on to join the Far Right populist party, One Nation, in the late 1990s, and became the vice-president for the state of New South Wales, directly under David Oldfield. Later, he founded the Sydney Forum, an annual conference for peoples of all political persuasions, with Dr Saleam. The Forum was born out of Inverell Forum, and was intended to break the barriers to left-right thinking, attract people of different political camps, and unite them on the issues that concern them.

Like a good many nationalists, Welf became disillusioned with One Nation, which self-destructed after its losses at the federal election of 1998 – in which it won a million votes, but not one seat. Welf felt, around this time, that he had taken party-political activism to the limit, and that it had so far gotten him nowhere. He now believed that the people who had become involved in One Nation were only interested in positions of money, power, succeeding in the rat race. He began to look around for an alternative. He had long been interested in the ideas of Third Positionism and National Anarchism, and now began to apply them to his own activism...

In summary: Welf was an activist with the NPD in Germany, which he left in 1987, and in Australia was a member (in addition to the Australian Democrats) of the One Nation Party. However, he has played an active role in other racist and fascist groups and projects.

Australian Friends of the BNP/Australian Friends of Europe

In 1998, senior BNP official Nick Griffin... applied unsuccessfully for a visa to Australia to undertake a speaking tour under the auspices of the neo-Nazi group, National Action. Since that time, the main support for the BNP in Australia has come from the group, Australian Friends of Europe (AFE), formerly known as Australian Friends of the BNP, based in Petersham, NSW.

The AFE’s principal organisers are Welf Herfurth and Mark Wilson. Wilson migrated to Australia in the 1980s from Britain where he had been the BNP local organiser in Essex. He has previously spoken to Australia’s oldest racist group, the Australian League of Rights, which has touted him as an expert on “the effects of multiculturalism in Britain”.

Mark Wilson is now a member of the 'Australian Protectionist Party' (arch-rivals to Dr James Saleam's 'Australia First Party').

Sydney Forum

While acting as MC at the Sydney Forum (2001--2007 and 2009), Welf was also responsible for attempting to bring into Australia two leading NPD figures: Udo Voight (2003) and Gerd Finkenwirth (2005). On both occasions, the neo-Nazis were prevented from entering Australia by Immigration authorities on the grounds of their alleged 'bad character'.

Speaking of which:

On 28 August [2001], the annual general meeting in Sydney of Australia’s oldest racist group, the Australian League of Rights, became the scene of a punch-up between the city’s two main neo-Nazi groups, as each sought dominance over the event.

A report of the incident has been issued by the violent white supremacist group, the Australian Nationalists Movement. It details how David Palmer, the “Führer” of the neo-Nazi group, Australian Strikeforce Guards for Aryan Resistance and Defence (ASGARD), sought entry to the Australian League of Rights AGM at the Estonian Club in Sydney, with three of his supporters. Palmer was allegedly confronted by Jim Saleam, the NSW leader of the neo-Nazi National Action group, with ten or twelve of his followers. According to the report, Saleam accused Palmer of being an ASIO spy and Special Branch informant, and a resulting fistfight developed between the two groups.

The punch-up overshadowed the keynote speaker at the AGM, Welf Herfurth, a former German neo-Nazi who was recently appointed the president of the Riverstone, NSW, branch of the One Nation Party. Previously profiled in ADC ONLINE in July 2001, Herfurth is a former executive member of Germany’s most active neo-Nazi group, the Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands (NPD), in Bavaria, Germany, and was involved in its youth arm (the German Government is currently applying to the courts to have the NPD outlawed). He is also a principal organiser of Australian Friends of Europe, the Australian arm of the extreme-right British National Party, which has close ties to British neo-Nazi groups, including Combat 18 and the National Front. The report of the AGM also describes Herfurth as being associated with National Action.

Notwithstanding recent media revelations linking Herfurth to neo-Nazi groups, One Nation has not publicly disassociated itself from Herfurth or prevented him from holding a senior leadership position in the party.

Of course, times change, and in 2007, former ONP leader Pauline Hanson refused to share a stage with Herfurth (and fellow Holocaust denialist Richard Krege) at the Inverell Forum.

Some things don't change, however, and:

Not surprisingly, Herfurth’s article ['On Kameradschaft'] refers to Germany’s servitude to Israel and America, forced upon it by Germany’s defeat in the War and sixty years of Holocaust brainwashing.” He comments: "Massive government funds are earmarked as compensation payments to Jews who were ‘gassed’ by Germans during the war (and then many turned up alive again)." According to Herfurth, the Holocaust was highly lucrative for the Jews and brought post-war Germany to its knees. He labels Zionism as a myth and Israel is referred to as the most powerful state in the Western world. Herfurth asks how Australian nationalists could imitate the German example by breaking down nationalist stereotypes promoted by the Jewish owned media, and writes about liberating Germany from bondage to NATO and Israel.

On the subject of the Holocaust, Herfurth is also a close kamerad of Adelaide-based denialist Frederick Töben. On January 27, 2005, the pair pranced about Sydney armed with an NPD flag allegedly once belonging to German neo-Nazi Horst Mahler (for further information on Mahler: 'The Ideological Evolution of Horst Mahler: The Far Left-Extreme Right Synthesis', George Michael, Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, Volume 32, Number 4, April 2009, pp.346--366).

Volksfront Australia

In December 2008, a poster on SF claimed that the leadership of Volksfront Australia -- a local franchise of the US-based neo-Nazi skinhead gang -- were Welf Herfurth and the Newcastle-based neo-Nazi skinhead Douglas Schott (the vocalist with neo-Nazi reich 'n' roll band 'Blood Red Eagle'). 'Pitbull38' concluded his remarks by stating that Volksfront "are outcasts (akin to [Combat-18]) in Australia as far as [Southern Cross Hammerskins] & [Blood & Honour] are concerned. So if you don’t want to be outcasts yourselves, avoid them like the plague." Note that both Welf and Douglas were once very close to both B&H and the SCHS: in February 2006, Welf was invited by organiser Douglas to attend a B&H gig in Newcastle, along with the following:,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Note that allegedly belongs to David Astin, a speaker at the 2009 Sydney Forum.

Minor characters

As noted, aside from Welf, there are a handful of other "national anarchists" in Australia, a number -- perhaps even a majority -- of whom are barely adults. Below are very short profiles of three of these individuals. More will be added as time progresses.

"David Donald" is -- or rather, was -- the "Yarra National Anarchists" (David took over this role from "Andreas Faust" when Andreas, after a brief sojourn in Melbourne, returned to Tasmania). Unlike most of Herfurth's followers, "David" is not a teenager -- in fact, he's in his 30s. He also claims to be a well-paid professional, employed by the Victorian Government. Sadly, "David" trusts incompetent little boys like Scott Harrison (below) to keep his personal details safe: meaning he may well be forced to put his brown-shirt through the wash again in the not-too-distant future.

Sorry "David"!

Scott Harrison is an 18-year-old boy from Geelong, where he is a student at the local TAFE. By his own admission, Scott's interest in racial politics was sparked by his excitement at the Cronulla pogrom in December 2005. Soon after, he joined Stormfront. There, Scott was naturally drawn into the orbit of various local neo-Nazis -- including neo-Nazi skinhead and Melbourne resident Patrick O'Sullivan -- but within a few years had decided that he was not a neo-Nazi but in fact a "national anarchist".

"Wayne Robertson" is a "national anarchist" from WA, and in his late 20s. Along with Scott (and Darrin Hodges, leader of the NSW branch of the minuscule 'Australian Protectionist Party'), "Wayne" attended the fascist rally at the APEC protests in Sydney in September 2007.

"National anarchism"?

"National anarchism" is an oxymoron.

"National anarchists" -- such as Scott Harrison (above) -- claim to have something to do with anarchism.

This is a lie.

“National anarchism” is, in reality, a recent ideological development on the far right. Its chief protagonist in the English-speaking world is Troy Southgate (UK). On Southgate, see: ‘Co-opting the Counter Culture: Troy Southgate and the National Revolutionary Faction’, Graham D. Macklin, Patterns of Prejudice, Vol.39, No.3, September 2005.

Two more recent articles which address ‘national anarchism’ are ‘Rebranding Fascism: National-Anarchists’, Spencer Sunshine, Public Eye, Vol.23, No.4, Winter 2008 and ‘National Anarchism: California Racists Claim They’re Anarchists’, Casey Sanchez, Intelligence Report, Summer 2009.

In brief, ‘national anarchism’ has evolved as a response by elements of the far right to the apparent popularity of anarchism among yoof — especially in terms of opposition to ‘globalisation’ — and signifies an attempt by white racists and fascists to appropriate elements of anarchist ideology, organisational modes and symbology in order to advance their own cause. In this context, it should be remembered that fascism has always been a syncretic ideology and movement. That is, fascists are happy to attempt to incorporate seemingly contradictory impulses within the one ideology/movement — such as anarchism and nationalism — if this is thought to bring about political advantage.

The most successful example of this form of cultural appropriation may be found within the German far right. On this subject, see: ‘When Nazis go Pop… New strategies of the extreme right in Germany’, RAGGACORE, LFO DEMON, November 12, 2004.

The vast majority of ‘national anarchists’ come from the far right. In Australia, their chief ideologue is Welf Herfurth, a German-born Australian resident, former member of the NPD, and a range of other far right political formations. He is a Holocaust denialist, and a close comrade of Frederick Toben, a revisionist historian. Herfurth has stated that his chief ideological inspiration is Troy Southgate and, like Southgate, he has established a front group, known as the ‘New Right’. Some indication of the nature of the ‘New Right’ (UK) may be found by examining the list of speakers it has invited to address its meetings.

In 2008, Herfurth, together with a local (Australian) bonehead named Douglas Schott (who is a member of the neo-Nazi RAC band ‘Blood Red Eagle’), attempted to form the Australian franchise of US-based bonehead organisation ‘Volksfront’; both Herfurth and Schott have previously been organisers for ‘Blood & Honour’.

In 2009, Andrew Yeoman, the leader of BANANAs in the Bay Area, is scheduled to speak at the Sydney Forum (September 26/27).

BANANAs and other ‘national anarchist’ groupuscules attempt to attach themselves to anything, and anyone, they believe might prove useful — the point is not to protest any ‘issue’, but to be public, and visible. That said, their general preference is to attach themselves to ‘progressive’ causes.

The number of adherents ‘national anarchism’ can call upon is tiny — in Australia, they number no more than a few dozen.

Clearly indicating to ‘national anarchists’ that they are not welcome at public events is a worthwhile tactic — how this can or should be communicated to them is of course up to those concerned. In Australia, a quiet word has sufficed.

‘National anarchists’ are deeply implicated in other fascist, racist, and white supremacist projects. Their political potential is very limited. However, such attempts to dress fascism in anarchist drag are provocative (to put it mildly), and to the extent that anarchists, in particular, allow fascists to do so, they will thoroughly deserve it when members of the general public come to identify anarchism with racism. Or to put it another way: lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas.

Future posts will provide profiles on groups and individuals who have attached themselves to ‘national anarchism’…
